yep, because we all love chicken, and also, domestic violence in our communities, at it’s staggering rates is fucking hilarious. “omg, chicken+dv, LOLZ, let’s make a meme.” did y’all know that “Black females experienced domestic violence at a rate 35% higher than that of white females, and about 22 times the rate of women of other races.” (from the NCADV) i am not amused and reblogging this shit without any meaningful commentary is collusion.

Was this supposed to be funny? Like… this doesn’t even look like a meme. Its just looks like a terrible idea…

Feminism starts out being very simple. It starts out being the instinct of a little child who says ‘it’s not fair’ and ‘you’re not the boss of me,’ it’s something in us who knows that…and it ends up being a world view that questions hierarchy all together.”

- Gloria Steinem, Gloria: In Her Own Words (via hellblazers)

This is Nikyatu Jusu’s “African Booty...

This is Nikyatu Jusu’s “African Booty Scratcher.” It’s a wonderfully produced film about immigrant experiences, second-generation identity, and female adolescence. As a kind of second-generation American (my father was born in Jamaican and my mother was born in Brooklyn, NY)/actually a Jamaican citizen who doesn’t fit into any of these categories too neatly, I can definitely relate to and appreciate Jusu’s work.

This is my first (and as of now only) short film. For my final project in Race and Technology 2.0, I had to make a visual representation of my ‘video game project.’ (And YES, I was assigned 2-3 hours of video-gaming a week as my homework) My goal was to offer parallels and points of intersection between Def Jam Icon and minstrel shows. My voice is cracking, and the iMovie editing is lousy because, in true Freshman-in-college fashion I was recording my voiceover at 1am. But since then, I’ve moved towards playwriting and performance piece, which, in true Sophomore-in-college fashion, I didn’t record.

(who is now saddened by the fact that the hi-my-name-is-Maya-and-I-go-to-this-really-small-private-school-that-most-people-have-never-even-heard-of- intro is my <strike>go to</strike> only form of introduction). But, anyway, I’m really into makeup, fashion, shoes, and I’M LYING. I wear whatever looks good on me and the two times that I wore eyeliner (my Sweet 16 and Prom) my hyperactive tear ducts washed away any evidence that this weapon of mainstream femininity ever even attacked my naturally beautiful face in the first place. Outside of my awkward, once-in-a-blue-moon interactions with makeup, I’ll mostly be blogging about films, photography, and my feminist take on pop-culture. I’m a contributing writer at Urbane Perspective Magazine, and I love spicy food, sports, meeting new people (and going off on tangents…)

Hello Tumblr!

Okay! So I was always a little skeptical about Tumblr. My friends’ reblogging of ‘cuddly kittens’ and a recap of why “[their] life is average” just wasn’t cutting it for me. But, while looking up (read as stalking) some of the young, talented and generally awesome (and of course female) filmmakers of my generation… I came to the realization that Tumblr is a great blogging space. It’s format is perfect for film reviews and judging by all the internship applications that have a convenient spot for the Tumblr that I didn’t have… I decided to make one. So, here it is!
